What to wear:
Come prepared for a wee drop of rain and wear comfortable shoes – you don’t need walking boots. Our walks are on level ground (mostly on the pavement/sidewalk). Please note, the Jacob's Ladder walk to McCaig's Tower requires a good level of physical fitness and ability as the walk involves many steps and steep inclines!
What to bring:
Bring your camera or smart phone, there’s stunning scenery en route.
Where to meet:
We meet outside the VisitScotland iCentre at the back of new Harbour Building on North Pier (see map). We will begin our tour on North Pier.
Themed walks (such as the Built Heritage Walk) may start from another designated location - this will be highlighted on your tour ticket.
Group bookings and private tours may have alternative starting points and arrangements.
How long is the walk:
Our standard walk takes approximately 1 ½ hours. Please note, these times are for guidance only and your walk may take longer depending on the size of the group, the pace and weather conditions on the day. If you have a rigid schedule please let your guide know in advance. If you are booking a private tour then your guide will arrange a walking tour to suit the time you have available. Guides can be booked for the morning, afternoon or full day.
How to book:
Buy your ticket online and just bring along your ticket to give to the guide (or display the confirmation email on your device) to the guide for them to check you in by scanning the QR code. Please be at the meeting point at least five minutes before your scheduled departure time.
Last minute bookings:
You can turn up at the meeting point 10 mins before the scheduled departure time and if there’s availability you are welcome to book a tour there and then. Our guides can only take payment in cash if you have the correct amount. Online bookings can be made at the Walking Tour Meeting Point using the town's FREE WI-FI or from the desk at the VisitScotland icentre. For administrative purposes we would ask that you book online in advance where possible.

Themed Walks - our routes:
We can offer a variety of themed walks and tours. This season we have a Built Heritage Walking Trail which begins at the Rockfield Centre on Stevenson Street. Please enquire by email or via the online enquiry form if you would like to book this themed walk.
We are also offering a Walking Tour of Kerrera island - this route is offered on a private tour basis so a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 people (including children) per guide. Please note, this guided walk is on rough tracks and open fields - there are several steep inclines and to reach Gylen Castle requires nimble footwork and decent walking boots with a good grip. The walk is NOT considered suitable for anyone with mobility issues and requires a good level of general fitness. Please contact us for further details as there are several options once on the island depending on the time you have available, fitness levels, interests and weather.
Our standard Guided Oban Walking Tour takes approximately 90 minutes and covers around 1 ½ miles. This walk is level and mostly on paved paths.
The optional walk to McCaig's Tower via Jacob's Ladder involves steep inclines and many steps. Please request this route. If you have not booked a private tour then everyone on the walk must agree and be capable of climbing steps.
The Built Heritage (themed) Walk is approximately 1 mile. Please note, this walk may be delivered by guides from the Rockfield Centre and is subject to demand.
Individual guests are welcome to leave a tour at any point, but please let your guide know.
Please note, the time taken to complete any of the walking routes may vary depending on the size of the group, the weather and traffic conditions on the day. All times are approximate and the route may be adapted as required.
